Tri Training - Week 3

by Rachel

This was supposed to be my big push week - 16 hours of training, leading up to my recovery week in week 4. I was excited to put in the extra time if I could, and go into week 4 ready to rest and recover (well, relatively anyways - week 4 is down to 8.5 hours of training).

I also didn't want to put my training before the rest of my life - so when it came down to it, I ended up listening to my body and what was happening on Sunday and decided to leave well enough alone - I didn't get the hours in but I feel really good about my effort for the week - no regrets!

Thursday Thoughts

by Rachel

Paul entered a contest through 2Toms (OK, I entered it for him) - the "Worst Blister Challenge"... as soon as I saw it I knew he could win! If he gets the most votes, he wins 1 SportShield roll-on 1.5ounce, 1 ButtShield roll-on 1.5ounce,1 BlisterShield 8 ounce, 1 BlisterShield 32 ounce, 1 StinkFree Shoe Spray bottle, 1 48-count SportShield towelettes, 1 48-count BlisterShield Trial Size, 1 10 pak Stink Free Sports Detergent Packettes, 1 Stink Free Sports Detergent 30 oz Bottle - whew!

I'll leave the blister picture on their website - but if you want to see the magnificence and vote for Paul's toe, please head on over there!

Speaking of blisters, I have been told I need to become an expert on fixing blisters, since I'm Paul's crew for the SD100. One of Paul's pacers (keithski) suggested the book "Fixing Your Feet" - so I have it on hold at the library - I'll be interested to see all that's in there.

In the meantime, I googled a bit and found the blister care section on the Badwater website - if anyone knows about blisters, it's the people involved with the Badwater race! I found out a lot just by reading this page, plus the two referenced at the bottom of the page. I guess I need to put together a good blister kit before June!

Any advice on dealing with painful blisters during races???

Tri Training - Week 2

by Rachel

This week my challenge was to squeeze in 2 additional hours of training for a total of 14.5 hours. This has been hard because I have never put this many hours into training - let me show you last year's training minutes graph (this is when I was using sparkpeople.com to track everything):

Tri Training - Week 1

by Rachel
I am using dailymile.com to track my workouts this year - I like it because it's easy to input your workouts, and gives you some pretty charts and summaries! Also, you can "friend" other people that use DM, and comment on their workouts, and they can comment on yours. It's a really easy way to be cheerleaders for eachother!

This week ended up being a really great training week - and while I could feel the squeeze on my schedule to fit more in, I think I arranged everything to be minimally disturbing to my life and my family's life. Week 1 done - 23 to go!

Oriflamme 50K, No plan mostly fun

by Paul

I went into this race mostly to have fun and I had no plan except to finish. To begin with, it was a makeup race - it had been canceled due to weather in March and rescheduled for April 7th. I had planned (when it was on March 17th, St. Patrick's Day) to wear my sportkilt and all green outfit. Things changed after it got rescheduled, so I put on my normal running clothes. It was all good though - when Oriflamme got canceled I decided to do a 50k of my own at Lake Hodges all dressed up in my St Paddy's outfit. It was stormy that day but a lot of fun.

Saturday April 7th was the makeup day and it turned out to be one beautiful morning to run. My feet were still recovering from the Old Goat 50 miler, so I was a little worried about adding more blisters. I didn't really prepare for the race because of my feet laying me up for a week and a half. I got a couple of runs in two days prior to the race and my feet were hardening. I learned now that every time I go out I'll be lubing these feet up - and making sure I stop and take care of any hot spots as soon as they show up.

This race starts in the Laguna Mountains, heads down to the Anza Borrego Desert where you turn around, then climbs back up to the mountains. The race starts at Sunrise Parking lot and heads out on the Pacific Crest Trail(PCT) loop trail until you cross Sunrise Highway and get on the PCT trail for 5 miles. Next you run on the Mason Truck Trail for about 2 miles - then down the steep rocky path of the Oriflamme Truck Trail for 5 miles. Once you hit the desert floor you run on sand for the rest of the way until you turn around and climb back up through sand, rocks and heat.

Thursday Thoughts

I'm full swing into Week 1 of my tri training - going from 8 hours of exercise in a week to 12 hours is an adjustment! But I'm enjoying it so far, and will be recapping each week - I have found it's really helpful to keep track of your training details to look back on and compare, to make sure that you're on track to meet your goals (it appeals to my mathematical side I think).

Thursday Thoughts

by Rachel

Next week I officially begin my 70.3 training plan - Week 1 of 24! The Orangeman Triathlon is on September 23rd and I'm going to be soooo ready for it!

I read The Triathlete's Training Bible, by Joe Friel, and took about 7 pages of notes! I tried to put together a plan that I felt like I could stick to, and also not run myself ragged - so here's what my Week 1 Training Plan looks like:
